Thomas Tuchel, the former head coach of Bayern Munich and Chelsea, is reportedly in talks to take over as England’s next manager, despite ongoing connections to the Manchester United position.
After quitting his position at the Allianz Arena at the end of the previous season, the 51-year-old has not been in management. With the once-repeated Bundesliga champions, he was only able to manage a third-place result.
Although there were always going to be proposals for Tuchel to return to manager right away, the 2020–21 Champions League winner has been waiting his turn and hasn’t committed to a position yet.
Tuchel has, however, been heavily linked to a move to Manchester United, as the Red Devils are expected to split ways with the under-fire Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the season.
At a meeting of Man United executives earlier this week, no decision is believed to have been taken on Ten Hag’s future, but Tuchel is already rumored to have selected his first hire if Ten Hag were to accept the position.
Tuchel ‘negotiating’ to take over as manager of England
Instead, the German is reportedly in talks with the FA to take over as the next head coach of the England national team, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk.
The governing body is searching for a long-term replacement for Gareth Southgate, who left his post after his country advanced to the final of the European Championship twice, although they were both lost.
Although Tuchel was available right away, England temporarily named Lee Carsley as head coach of the Under-21 team to give them several months to evaluate potential options and make a decision.
Carsley had a good start to his reign, defeating Finland and the Republic of Ireland 2-0, but in Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match, the 50-year-old watched an unexpected 2-1 loss to Greece.
Carsley then stated that he did not want the position to be his permanent one, but even so, the FA will keep him in the hot seat until the end of the year at the latest.
Talk about leaving exposed Ten Hag’s position.
Ten Hag is still expecting to be in charge of the match against Brentford next weekend, according to the Manchester Evening News, despite not having received any official word from the higher authorities that his position is in danger.
But during their meeting this week, one member of the Man United hierarchy is said to have pushed for his dismissal, and he is still under a lot of pressure right now.
Even though Carsley’s defeat to Greece will always be remembered as a setback, the Daily Mail reports that the FA still considers him a strong candidate for head coach.
Pep Guardiola, who will be free to leave Manchester City in 2025, is also said to be highly regarded on England’s shortlist of potential head coaches, along with Eddie Howe and Graham Potter.
