Man United are the favourite to add Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has been in brilliant form, and his exploits between the sticks have already triggered an alarm among many teams. The Red Devils do have one of the best in business in David de Gea, who has been more than consistent for his side in the past decade.
But the modern game demands more than just shot-stopping, and David looks to be lacking in some of those aspects. Erik ten Hag craves a sweeper keeper who can not only help his team in building from the back but can take part in launching the most accurate ball if needed.
That is why Man United have shown interest in several shot-stoppers, including Odysseas Vlachodimos. Meanwhile, David de Gea has worked on his game, and improvements have been evident. But there have been doubts over his adaptability to the Dutch manager’s approach.
And perhaps, Man United could introduce a new face to offer the 31-year-old goalkeeper some stiff competition. Generally, a goalkeeper hits his peak in his late twenties. But Portugal international has already broken all the shackles and has demonstrated what he is capable of at Porto.
It is expected Diogo is destined to reach the pinnacle of his career pretty early. With his current deal expiring in 2026, the Red Devils would have to pay a substantial sum to acquire the rights of the player. Diogo has a £51m release clause in his contract. But Man United are expected to negotiate the amount.
