Manchester United summer target Frenkie de Jong is not interested in leaving Barcelona in January
Frenkie de Jong, who Manchester United targeted in the recent transfer window, is not interested in a move away from Barcelona in January, according to Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils pursued the 25-year-old’s signature for most of the summer of 2022. However, the Old Trafford side were not able to get a deal over the line for the Holland international.
Erik ten Hag, who managed the midfielder at Ajax, had identified him as a top target in the recent window. Now it seems the Manchester-based club will once again falter in the winter if they were to make another move.
De Jong has not been the first choice in Catalunya under Xavi Hernandez in the current campaign. The Holland international has been behind the likes of Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Gavi in the pecking order for a place in the starting lineup.
The midfielder has featured 15 times for Barcelona in all competitions. He has played in multiple positions this season, including the number six and number eight roles.
United ended up bolstering the middle of the park in the summer of 2022 with the addition of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The Danish and Brazilian stars have formed a brilliant partnership for the Red Devils in the engine room under Ten Hag.
The midfield duo have started the last three games together for the Old Trafford side in all competitions. While Eriksen provides creativity in the middle of the park, Casemiro brings stability with his defensive work.
